Some radio broadcasting stations use hot lines to encourage the listeners to take part in the talk shows. That’s a good idea. Yet, the fact is, some people do nothing but break the whole programme. Some people know little about the topic under discussion. Sometimes they do not even know what the host is talking about so the host has to tell the caller what the show is about Usually the caller will ask a few questions which express his hope and show his ignorance(无知). Then the host has to answer and explain—how silly this is! It wastes a lot of time. To let the listeners hear them they don’t care what the topic is, no matter whether they themselves are interested in it or how silly they appear to be. I’m totally bored by those people. It’s necessary for radio stations to improve the hotline programmes. In my opinion, if a caller doesn’t know what is going on, the operator should not let the caller take part in it. 56.The sentence “some people do nothing but break the whole programme” may tell us that ____. A.radio stations use hotlines in a wrong way B.it is a fact C.it is a good idea D.some people have unclear thoughts 57.Which of the following is NOT true? A.Some people know little about the topic under discussion. B.Some people do not know what the host id talking about. C.Some people do not know what the show is about. A.for the host works hard B.because of the caller’s ignorance C.for the host likes talking to the caller D.because of the questions raised by the listener 59.The passage doesn’t tell us the idea ____ . A.that some listeners phone the hotlines for fun B.that some people just want to be heard by others C.that some people who don’t care what the topic is must have realized that they appear to be silly D.what the hotline programmes are
B Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die. 60.Some birds like to sit on a sheep because ____ . A.they depend on the sheep for existence B.they enjoy traveling with the sheep C.they can eat its parasites D.they find it most comfortable to sit on the sheep’s back 61.The underlined work “they” in the sentence of the first paragraph refers to “____”. A.birds and parasites B.birds and sheep C.parasites and sheep D.sheep, birds and parasites 62.It can be learnt form the passage that the coral depends on the plant for ___ . A.comfort B.light C.food D.oxygen 63.What does the second paragraph mainly discuss? A.Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence. B.Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily. C.Some plants depend on each other for food. D.Some animals live better together.
C In the past ten years, America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown increasingly with the rest of the world to supply players. When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名册) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stern happily embrace the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future which is likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010. The NBA is now planning to take China by storm. “Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,: said Stern. The strategy(战略)in China is television. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil. “It doesn’t matter where the players come from, al the NBA teams now know that they have to scout[揽得(人才)] internationally,” said Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last season, many people can earn the respect of their American peers(同行). Others, such as the Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming – number one draft pick in 2003 – and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic – number two overall in this year’s draft – are icons(偶像) in-waiting. It is the ultimate revolution – the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball. 64.The underlined phrase “take China by storm” means that ______ . A.NBA intends to make China its “marketing center” B.NBA is planning to set up some training centers in China C.there’ll be a big storm when NBA comes to China to play against China men’s team D.The NBA’s live basket games will be broadcasted on all the TVs in China 65.What seems to be the biggest change that is happening to NBA? A.NBA is expecting more foreign players to join the league. B.China’s rapid development in sports affects NBA. C.Yao Ming has taken the place of Michael Jordan. D.The NBA will stop teaching the world how to play basketball. 66.When the writer talked of “home soil”, he was referring to ______ . A.farms in the States B.native Americans C.the NBA training center D.the USA 67.Which of the following can be used as another good title for the passage? A.The Non-American Basketball Players B.NBA Is Coming to China C.The Foreign Ties That Bind the NBA D.NBA Is Making Great Progress
D The woman’s college had a very small car-park, and as several of the teachers and students, and many of the students’ boy-friends, had cars, it was often difficult to find a place to park. The head of the college, whose was Baker, therefore had a special place in the car-park for her own car. There were white lines round it, and it had a notice saying, “Reserved for Head of College.” One evening, however, when Miss Baker got back to the college a few minutes before the time by which all students had to be in, she found another car in her parking place. There were two people in it, one of her girl-students and a young man. Miss Baker knew that the young man would have to leave very soon, so she decided to ask him to move his car a bit, so that she could park hers in the proper place for the night before going to bed.
