Though Keller was on of the most famous women in the world during her life, most people now do not know her as the woman who was the activist, peace-maker and women’s rights advocator. Like many young people, the Miracle worker was my introduction to Keller. I first read the play in my seventh grade English class, where I learned about her as the famous deaf and blind child from Tuscumbia, Ala. It wasn’t until years later when I got a job at the American Foundation for the Blind that I came to know more about the adult Keller. “Some of us have imagined that we live in a democracy(民主国度),” Keller once said. “We do not. A democracy would have a chance to be healthy, well-fed, and well-educated. It would mean that every human being would help make the laws and use them well: it would mean that everyone would have equal opportunities. Such a democracy has never existed.” Keller gave this speech somewhere between 1910 and 1919 when she was in her 30s. It reflects a Helen Keller I never knew growing up. Yet she is the woman who inspires me today. 56.Helen Keller was born in . A. 1860sB.1870sC.1880sD.1890s 57. What’s the first impression the author had on Helen Keller? A. C In America, where labor costs are so high, “do-it-yourself” is a way of life, Many people repair their own cars, build their own cars, build their own garages, even rebuild their own houses. Soon many of them will also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company that publishes children's books with the help of computers. Although other book companies also publish that way, this company is not like the others. It allows the reader to become the leading character(主要人物) in the stories with the help of computers. Here is how they do it. Let us suppose the child is named Jenny. She lives in New York, and has a dog named Hody. The computer uses this information to make up a story with pictures. The story is then printed up. A child who receives such a book might say, “This book is about me,” so the company calls itself the “Me-Books Publishing Company”. (责任编辑:admin) |
