Most Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without cars. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.
One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been tying to do. But to build a car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well a electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.
To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.
But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.
Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

Mr. Paul was a professor of medicine, who was very strict with the students. Whenever Mr. Paul took the chair on the exam committee, the students would be in fear, because he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave. A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him. At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again. Now a student entered the exam room and got seated before the committee. This student was a little nervous as he knew it would not be so easy to get through the exam at all.
Mr. Paul began to ask. The student was required to describe a certain illness, his description of which turned out to be OK.
Then Mr. Paul asked abut the cure(治疗) for the illness, and the student, too, answered just as right. “Good,” said the professor, “and how much will you give the patient?”
“A full spoon,” answered the student.
“ Now you may go out and wait for what you get,” said Mr. Paul. At the same time the committee discussed carefully the answers the student had given. Suddenly the student noticed that there was something wrong with his last answer. “ A full spoon is too much,” he thought to himself. Anxiously he opened the door of the room and cried. “Mr. Professor, I’ve made a mistake! A full spoon is too much for the patient. He can take only five drops.”

Many students worry about carrying too much on their back at school? You’re not alone. Back experts in the United States are worried that young students are having back and neck problems as a result of carrying too much in their backpacks.
“It hurts my back when I run,” said Enderlin Reyes, a student in Virginia. “It ‘s hard to get up the stairs with my backpack, because it’s too heavy.”
Reyes is among students whose backpacks were weighed for a week in a recent study.
They had regular backpacks with two straps(带子) to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads had switched to rolling backpacks, which have wheels and can roll on the ground.
Shirley Park, whose backpacks weighed 10 kilograms, said she changed to a rolling backpack because she was starting to have back pain.
How much is too much? Experts say students should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their own body weight.
A few students had one suggestion to lighten the load: less homework.
    P. S(附) Doctor’s suggestion:
    (1) Lighten the load. Clean out binders(活页材料) and take home only the books you need that night.
    (2) Wide straps are better. They send out the weight over your shoulders more evenly(均匀地). And be sure to wear both straps rather than hanging the pack over one shoulder.
    (3) Pack smart. The heavier things should be packed over one should.
    (4) Bend both knees when you pick up the pack, and don’t just bend over at the waist.
    64. The expression “switched to” in the text perhaps means ______.

    65. According to the passage, it’s better for a student of 40 kilograms to carry a backpack of ______ at most by the words of experts.
    A. 10 kg B. 8 kg C. 6 kg D. 7 kg
    66. If students follow the doctor’s suggestions, they ____.
    A. may lighten their backpacks B. can learn how to help themselves
    C. may feel their backpacks are lighterD. will know how to wear backpacks
    D.
People like different kinds of vacations. Some go camping. They swim, fish, cook over a fire and sleep outside. Others like to stay at a hotel in an exciting city. They go shopping all day and go dancing all night. Or maybe they go sightseeing to places such as Disneyland, the Taj Mahal or Louvre.
Some people are bored with sightseeing trips. They don’t want to be “tourists”. They want to have an adventure---a surprising and exciting trip. They want to learn something and maybe help people too. How can they do this? Some travel companies and environmental groups are planning special adventures. Sometimes these trips are difficult and full of the world. Some volunteers spend two weeks and study the environment. Others work with animals. Others learn about people of the past.
Would you like an adventure in the Far North? A team of volunteers is leaving from Murmansk, Russia. The leader of this trip is a professor from Alaska. He’s worried about chemicals from factories. He and the volunteers will study this pollution in the environment. If you like exercise and cold weather, this is a good trip for you. Volunteers need ski sixteen kilometers every day.
Do you enjoy ocean animals? You can spend two to four weeks in Hawaii. There, you can teach language to dolphins. Dolphins can follow orders such as “Bring me the large ball”. They also understand opposites. How much more can they understand? It will be exciting to learn about these intelligent animals. Another study trip goes to Washington State and follows orcas. We call orcas “ Killer Whale”. But they’re really dolphins----the largest kind of dolphin. These beautiful animals travel together in family groups. They move through the ocean with their mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers. Ocean pollution is chasing their lives. Earth watch is studying how this happens.
