14(河南省郑州市第47中学高一第一次月考)American hunger for cheese was reduced(减少)a bit when consumers (消费者) traveled and ate less following the year of 2001. Now their appetite (胃口) is back and they are eating more cheese than ever.
Most of the demand is being fed by household suppliers, and California’s mega-dairies (大制酪场) are growing so fast that experts expect the state to overtake Wisconsin in cheese production within two years. California is already the nation’s leading milk producer, and with the help of cheese makers like Hilmar Cheese Company—the largest in North America—the state has doubled its cheese production in the last ten years.
In 1995, California made 70 varieties of cheese. Now there are 250 types of cheese coming out of the state. One in every 10 pounds of cheese eaten is a higher-quality, value-added cheese. Ten years ago, only one in 15 pounds of cheese eaten was a specialty. Most of it is common cheese, but Americans are also eating much more cheese.
It is good news for California’s dairies (牛奶场). By pooling their resources, farmers could turn some of the high-protein, high-fat milk coming from their brown cows into cheese, a value-added product that would bring in a little extra cash. When they started the Hilmar Cheese Company in 1984, the 12 families together brought in 250,000 pounds of milk a day—a drop in a bucket for a company that now processes (加工) 10 million pounds of milk a day from more than 270 producers—about 10 percent of all the milk produced in California.
Cheese has great healthful value, and brings calcium (钙) back into diets. But it also makes food taste better, making it easier to eat too much. “It’s terrible that we’re eating more cheese, but bottom line, all calories count,” said Stern, who also suggests people should try to eat cheese in different ways, with pears or apple slices—expanding their diets.
    47. The passage is written to tell us _______.
    A. dairies are developing very fast
    B. Americans eat more cheese than ever
    C. how dairies are developing in America
    D. cheese is developing towards more varieties
    48. When the Hilmar Cheese Company was opened, it _______.
    A. was the largest company producing cheeseB. made 70 varieties of cheese
    C. was supplied with milk by 12 producersD. was made up of 12 families then
    49. The underlined word “It” (in Paragraph 4) refers to the fact that ______.
    A. Americans are eating more and more cheese
    B. cheese has more varieties
    C. cheese has great healthful value
    D. California is the nation’s leading milk producer
    50. In the opinion of Stern, ______.
    A. the more we eat cheese, the better we’ll become
    B. Americans are eating too much cheese
    C. more ways of eating cheese should be developed

15、 (河南省郑州市第47中学高一第一次月考)English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural (复数) of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites(相反)? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
    51. According to the passage ______.
    A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
    B. there should be egg in an eggplant
    C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
    D. boxing rings should be round
    52. Which of the following is the correct plural?
    A. Beeth. B. Geese. C. Meese. D. Tooth.
    53. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?
    A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee.
    C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.
    54. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “______”.
    A. blow B. roll up C. get hurt D. finish
    55. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.
    A. clever B. crazy C. lazy D. dull

16、 (河南省郑州市盛同学校高一第一次月考)We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed -ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把……按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not -so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate to share, and they develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is proper. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to achieve this goal.
    56. In the passage the writer’s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching” is ________.
