While visiting the family garden, 16-year-old Du falls asleep and sees Liu in her dream. They have a great time in the peony pavilion. When she wakes up, she becomes lovesick and thin for her love. Unable to recover, she wastes away and dies. Meanwhile, Liu finds Du’s portrait while travelling. He falls in love with the image. One night Du’s spirit appears to him. At her bidding(吩咐), he opens her grave and she returns to life. Du’s parents, who have moved to another city, hear the story of what has happened but refuse to believe it.
