Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose the friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later every one needs understanding and helping with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre with opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall building, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired any more. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck (垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red haired man with a happy look in his eye. “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 am by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

The word “sport” first meant something that people did in their spare time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals and birds. About hundreds of years ago the word was used for the organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. We often talk about “sports and games”. But they sometimes have different meanings. “Game” usually means “a kind of play with rules” while “sports” usually means “something that will bring you fun.”
People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other games (or sports). Some people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sports they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be such sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best one can make a lot of money.
For example, a football player in England earns more than 50,000 pounds in a year. Of course, only a few sportsmen can make as much money as that.
It is only possible to understand sports better if you know golf, tennis and motor-racing are among those which can bring a lot of money. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is this: the stars can earn more money from advertising than from sport.
An advertisement for sports equipment does not simply say “Buy our things.” It says, “Buy the same shirt and does as…”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their names or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.
    61. The word “sport” now usually means _______.
    A. something that people do in their spare time B. hunting wild animals and birds
    C. organized games D. school sports and games
    62. The word “sport” used to mean _______.
    A. something that people do in their spare time B. hunting wild animals and birds
    C. organized games D. all the above (责任编辑:admin)
