    Teaching Procedures:
    Step Ⅰ Greetings
    Greet the whole class as usual.
    Step Ⅱ Lead-in and Warming up
    (Show a newspaper.)
    T:Look at this newspaper.What can you see?
    Ss:Some advertisements in it.
    (Show a magazine.)
    T:Yes,there are too many advertisements in this newspaper.Now look at this magazine.There are also some advertisements on the last few pages.Everywhere we can find advertisements.When we walk in the street,we can see all kinds of advertisements in shopwindows and on both sides of the street.Some famous actors often appear in TV advertisements.Do you like advertisments?
    S1:Yes.
    T:Why?
    S1:I think an ad is informative and can help people buy and sell goods.
    T:Good.What about you ,Li Na?
    S2:I also like ads.Because ads can widen people’s knowledge and make people more experienced.
    T:Well.Sit down,please.What’s your opinion,Wang Lin?
    S3:I don’t like ads.Because the only purpose of some ads is to persuade people to buy their poorly made products.And some ads are even harmful.
    T:Yeah.There are many kinds of ads.Some ads are useful and truthful.However,some ads give a lot of misinformation.They are trying to persuade us to buy their poorly made products.Therefore,it’s wise for us to make sure the ads are telling the truth.
    (Show an ad on the screen.)
    T:Look at the picture on the screen.What can you see?
    Ss:A little girl holding a can of Pepsi.
    T:Yes.This is an ad about Pepsi.The lovely girl on the ad will draw children’s attention.
    (Show the slogan under the ad.)
    The Choice of a New Generation.
    T:This slogan is used to describe this ad,which shows that the new generation all like Pepsi best.What do you think it is trying to persuade us to buy?
    Ss:It’s trying to persuade us to buy a kind of drink—Pepsi.
    T:Yeah.(Show another ad on the screen.)
    T:Now look at this ad.What is it trying to persuade people to buy?
    Ss:A kind of shampoo.
    T:Yes.How is it trying to do so?
    (A student stands up to answer this question.)
    S:We can see the function and effect of this kind of shampoo on the ad.The ad tells the truth that your hair will be more soft and more smooth after you wash your hair with it.
    T:Yeah.How is the information conveyed?
    S:By the words“More soft and more smooth feel,more fine and more smooth care,...”printed in this ad.
    T:Good.I think you’ve learnt something about ads from the two ads we’ve just talked about.Now disscuss the question on the screen.
    (Show the question on the screen.)
    What kind of words do you think you would need to talk about advertising and advertisements?
    (Give the students two minutes to discuss it.Then collect the words and write them on the blackboard.)
    T:Who’d like to tell me what words you would need to talk about advertising and advertisements?
    S:I’d like to have a try,truthful,misinformation,mislead,persuade....
    (While the students are answering,teacher can write them on the blackboard.)
    (Bb:truthful,imisinformation,mislead,persuade,customer,producer,positive,negative,persuasive,informative,subjective,objective...)
    Step Ⅲ Listening
    (Show the pictures on the screen.)
    T:With the development of science and technology,computers are used more and more in our life.The Laptop computer in more popular and more convenient.Look at the pictures on the screen.
    There are many kinds of laptop computers.Suppose your mother is thinking about buying a laptop computer.But she is not sure which brand she would buy,so she has asked you to listen to ads from different companies.From the imformation you hear,she will decide which brand she would choose.What information do you think ads can give you?
    S:The function of a laptop computer.
    S:Weight and size.
    S:Reasons why you should choose this computer.
    S:Price.
    ...
    T:Good.You can get all kinds of information.Now open your books at Page 38.Look at Exercise 1 in Listening Part.Tick the items on the list below you think will be included in the ads,then list the information in the order of importance.Write “1” next to the most important information,“2” next to the second most important and so on.
    (When the students finish this task,teacher begins to play the tape.)
    T:Now,we are going to listen to some ads in Part 1.Please make notes of what you hear while listening.Then compare with your partner.At last check your answers to Question 1.Are you clear?
    Ss:Yes.
    T:OK.Let’s begin.
    (After finishing Exercise 2,deal with Exercise 3)
    T:OK.Work with your partner and make a list of things you think are important to take into consideration when buying a laptop computer.
    (Teacher writes the phrase—take...into consideration on the blackboard and explains it to the students.Then teacher gives the students two minutes to discuss.)
    T:OK.Let’s listen to Part 2.We are going to listen to some advice from an expert.Then compare your list with what the expert said.
    (Teacher plays the tape for the students to listen to and gets the students to finish Exercise 3.)
    T:Now use your answers from Part 1 and your notes from Part 2 to write a short note to your mother.Tell her which brand you think she should choose and why.At the same time,you can give her some useful general advice to help her make her decision.
    Step Ⅳ Speaking
    T:Now look at the Speaking Part on Page 39.Here are several readers,who have written to the local newspaper complaining about its advertisements and an editor,who is in charge of the newspaper’s advertisement section.(Teacher writes the phrase“in charge of” on the blackboard and explains it to the students.)
    First finish the role card.Then prepare a meeting between concerned readers and the editor.Work in groups.One of you acts as the editor,the others act as the readers.Before you start,I’ll explain a phrase to you.
    (Write the phrase—be to blame for sth. on the blackboard and explain it to the students.
    Then teacher puts the students in groups of five and gets them to prepare for a few minutes.At the end,teacher asks one or two groups to report their work to the rest of the class.)
    A sample dialogue:
    Editor:Now,everybody is here.I have recently received some letters complaining about the ads.Who’d like to be the first to tell me your problems about the product you bought?
    Reader A:The ads in your newspaper say that he/she will lose weight if one uses the products,but after I tried them,they didn’t work on me.I didn’t lose any weight.
    Editor:Oh,I’m sorry to hear that.Maybe you didn’t use them according to the instructions.Or you should continue trying them.If they don’t have any effect on you,you can contact with us.We’ll find out the truth and help you to make up for your loss.
    Reader B:I am very upset because I have just lost a lot of money after answering an ad in your newspaper.The ad was full of lies.I think that your newspaper should be responsible and help me get money back.
    Editor:Oh,really?That must have been caused by our carelessness.We didn’t tell if what the ads said was true or false before we printed the ads.It is our fault.Afterwards we’ll help you get your money back.
    Reader D:Many students in our school eat too much junk food.I think the newspaper is to blame for this because there are too many of such ads about junk food.
    Editor:I think ads are necessary because ads can provide information for customers and can also increase the product sales.
    Reader D:But it has an bad effect on the students.
    Editor:Well.We shall restrict the number of ads about junk food for the students’ health.
    Reader C:The ads in your newspaper show women as young,beautiful and stupid.This is bad because they will have a bad effect on the youth.These pictures may draw too much attention of the teenagers.The teenagers’ll fall behind in their lessons.
    Editor:Yes.We didn’t notice this problem before.From now on,we will restrict such ads.

    Step Ⅴ Summary and Homework
    T:Up to now,we’ve talked a lot about ads.And we’ve learnt something about ads by listening and speaking.Besides,we’ve learnt three useful phrases.After class,make some sentences with these phrases.And preview the reading passage—Advertising so much for today.
