B With his standard Mandarin pronunciation, practiced skills on Chinese expressions and special humor with a Peking accent, Dashan has become a household name across China. The Chinese language even though it is considered by many as one of the most difficult languages in the world. But to Dashan, the great challenge was a piece of cake due to his deep interest, proper method and the excellent environment he created for himself. “Interest is the best teacher.” Even if the 20-year-old Mark Rowswell—Dashan’s real name—hadn’t fully realized what attracted him to the Chinese department at the University of Toronto in Canada, he was already deeply interested in Chinese culture when he decided to have further studies in Beijing. Entering the Chinese department of Peking University in 1988, Dashan felt like a duck in water. Study is always a hard job, no matter how much interest you have. Therefore, effective ways are necessary to improvement. “Learn for life and learn in life” is Dashan’s belief. As a freshman at the University of Toronto, Dashan studied the textbooks, which especially aimed on foreign Chinese learners. They did help him build a solid foundation. However, that’s far from enough to grasp the Chinese language. Starting in his junior year, Dashan began to read original Chinese novels, Chinese newspapers and even the Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping. “Only the material for Chinese native readers could give me a proper sense of the language,” he said. The language that is the daily means of communication is the principle that Dashan always keeps in his mind. To learn in daily life requires a favorable language environment, which is also necessary for improvement. Dashan admits it is hard for Chinese English learners to be brought into a good English speaking environment, but he insists, “To listen and speak as much as possible does help.” To help Chinese English learners, Dashan took part in a VCD programme—“Travel with Dashan”—to teach daily and up-to-date English in real-life situations.

Dashan has become a household name across China. A. bcad B. cbda C. cbad D.bcda C My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didn’t know. How wrong we were! Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking. Before the bus takes off, we all join in a conversation: where’s the silent woman who sits at the front and never replies to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn’t have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver. We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, they’re still holding hands. The woman was pregnant late last year, and one day her change of shape showed that she’d given birth to the child. We even felt a little proud at the thought of our extended family. For many months, our only sadness lay in our being unable to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus.
Then, one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus. We greeted her with friendly familiarity we’d shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped from her lips with difficulty. All at once we realized why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her. Over dinner, we learned the story of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him very much, she explained. “I love him… and he loves me, even though he doesn’t express it very well,” she spoke in a low voice. “Lots of us have that problem, don’t we? We don’t say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that’s not good enough.” The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. But the atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we parted as friends—we shared names. 60.Which of the following might be the best title of this passage? A.Friends of the B. The Silent Woman on the Bus C. Going to Work by Bus D. Different Kinds of Friendship 61.All the following statements can describe the woman except ______. A. poor B. warm- hearted C. silent D. cold 62. The underlined word “establish” in the fourth passage probably has the same meaning as ______. A. keep B. discover C. set up D. accept 63. Why did the woman usually keep silence while taking the bus? A. She was worried about her disabled son.
    B. She was sad to see the happy Mexican couple as a single mother. C. She had difficulty in expressing herself. D. She was only interested in the bus driver. D All young people dream of travelling the world. They are restless and very eager to see new sights. However, they have little idea how they would really do it if given the chance. Because their knowledge of geography is quite limited, they seldom know much about the places they wish to visit or how they would get there. Already hundreds of thousands of Chinese student tourists are visiting these places-Wuyi, Lhasa, Lijiang, Dali, Vientiane and Phnom Penh. Indeed, these students will soon be the most travelled generation in China’s long history. The World Tourist Organization predicts that a quarter of a century from now the number of Chinese tourists going abroad will be twenty times what it is today. The largest percentage of these tourists will visit Southeast Asia. Not all Chinese who travel abroad will be tourists, however. More and more youths are deciding to volunteer their skills in this region, much like their peers in the Peace Corps of America. Critical thinking skills including planning for a trip and solving problems after the trip has begun.
