C Mr and Mrs Stokes were sitting in the garden of their London home when I arrived to interview(采访)them and their fourteen-year-old son Carl. But Carl was working upstairs.“He doesn't often leave his room,” his mother explained. At the moment Carl is working on a program(程序)for a new computer game. Computers have become his whole life. In the last year Carl has earned over £25,000 from writing programs. “When did he buy the computer?”I wondered. “We bought it for him eighteen months ago for his birthday, ”said Mr. Stokes. “We didn't know what we were doing. Our son has changed. Eighteen months ago he didn't see a computer. Now he doesn't talk about anything else. And we don't understand a thing about computers.” “And do you think it's good for him?” was my question. “No, we don't. We worry about him,” said Mrs. Stokes. “He doesn't have any other interests now. And he hasn't done any work for school exams.” Carl's parents don't understand computers. But Carl certainly does. “I love computers,” he said, “I soon got tired of playing games though. I like writing programs much better. I've got three computers now. I bought two more, I didn't earn much at first, but now I do. My parents make me put most of it in the bank.” 9. The Stokes bought their son the computer_______.     D Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social(社会的) experience, I became a door-to-door salesman(销售员). I once read a saying, “If somebody wants something of yours, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don’t, you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may think this an exaggeration(夸张), but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct. You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn’t been a salesman. You needn’t stand(忍受) doubtful(疑惑的) looks and not to say that it is quite right; you needn’t worry about being refused time after time; you needn’t always keep patience(耐心) and a smile; you needn’t repeat the same sentences over and over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike… I did this work for months, then I decided to give it up. Besides the reasons above, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus losing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting worse. Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in the college(大学) activities. Sometimes I felt tired and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don’t think it is worth doing such a thing for even though I was earning money it came at great cost(代价). Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about excellent students who do part-time work while also keeping high scores in class. But according to(根据) my experience, part-time work can have strong negative influences(负面影响) on study. Most students don’t consider(考虑) the relationship between study and work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for money, students should be careful about doing part-time work. 12. From the text, we can tell that the writer is _______. A. a man out of work B. a middle-school student C. a college student D. a door-to-door salesman 13. What made the writer give up his part-time job? a. His grades were getting worse. b. He did the job for a month. c. He was once a salesman. d. He often missed some college activities. e. Sometimes he felt tired and unhappy. A. b, c & d B. a, c & e C. a, b & e D. a, d & e 14. The writer thought _________. A. doing a part-time job was unnecessary B. part-time jobs had good influence on study C. it was hard to deal with the relationship between study and work D. part-time jobs would be good for every college student 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. Part-time Jobs are Useful B. Part-time Jobs can Cost Dear (昂贵) C. Part-time Jobs are Important to Many Students D.
