    Text 1
    W:Hello.
    M:Hi.Sally.This is Phil.
W:Great to hear from you, Phil. How have you been doing?
M:To tell you the truth, I'm very worried about our final examination next month. For one thing I can't sleep.
W:I understand.I went through the same thing last year.
M:That's exactly why I'm calling you.Do you have any suggestions for dealing with anxiety? You know how I hate exams.
W:Well, last year the university offered a stress management course at about this time.Have you been in contact with the student help services?
    M:No.I haven't had time.
W:Funny, isn't it? Just when students need help most,we can't afford time to get it.
M:Well, perhaps I should find out more about this stress management course.
W:I suggest you call the health services tomorrow. They open at 9:00 am.
    M:Thanks, Sally.
    Text 2
W:Do you ever eat fast food?
    M:Yes.
W:What kind of fast food do you normally eat?
    M:Oh,hamburgers,sandwiches, well,sometimes a pizza.
W: Oh, right. And how often do you eat fast food?
M:Er, well Monday to Friday when I'm working, every day,um,but not usually on the weekends.
W:And what time of the day do you eat fast food?
M:Well,at work as I said,at lunchtime.Sometimes, you know, if I'm going out and I've no time to cook in the evening then I'll send out for a pizza.
W:And what do you think of fast food? Which statement do you think is true? “It's convenient”?
M:Sure, that's sort of the main reason that I eat it.We're paying for the convenience;you know the speed of it.
    W:Right.How about“It tastes good”?
M:Yeah.Um,I mean, not as good as food in a good restaurant.but it's not bad.
    W:It's good for you?
M:No.The food itself isn't very good for us.There are not enough greens,um,you know vegetables or salad.
    Text 3
    W:Hello,Richard.Nice to meet you.
M:Hi, Barbara.Haven't seen you for ages.
W:I've just come back from Canada.I was helping in a research program, and I stayed in a town near Toronto for two months.
M:Oh.how nice! Did your program go smoothly?
W:Yes.And I'm going back in March to continue.
M:Did you enjoy your stay in Canada?
W:Oh, yes. They were very nice people,I mean, the people I worked with.Very friendly and very helpful.
M:Did you travel a lot there?
W:No,we were very busy, trying to finish the first part before Christmas. But my friends took me to quite a few parties, and I’ll never forget the big meal on Thanksgiving Day.
M:Oh, I have heard of the meal.Did you really eat turkey?
W:Yeah.Turkeys are a tradition of Thanksgiving Day.Americans and Canadians eat turkeys.
    M:Anything more?
    W:Yes,let me see.Oh,cornbread,and pumpkin pie.
M:You certainly learned a lot there.
W:I will tell vou more when we are both free.
    Text 4
In l 896, Einstein went to college to study physics. There he met a girl from Hungary. They studied in the same class and the same interest in physics brought them together and they became good friends. Before long they fell in lore.In l 903 when Einstein was 24, he married Marits, who was 4 years older than he.
After their marriage Einstein devoted himself to the research of the great theory. To give her husband more help, Marits gave up her own work, and became a good wife and assistant. She tried her best to encourage him whenever possible. She was sure her husband would succeed. They often discussed the theory while walking outside or sitting together in the room. They even did that in their letters when one of them was away from their home.
In l914, Einstein moved to Berlin in Germany and settled down there. At that time his theory proved to be correct and he had become famous all over the world. But it was not long before the First World War broke out.Marits as well as her two sons, who was on holiday in Switzerland, couldn't come back to Berlin any more. The war not only stopped Einstein's work but also broke up the warm, happy family. In l9l9.their marriage ended at last.
    Text 5
Captain Stone was an officer in charge of training soldiers. The officer was very strict with his soldiers in everything.Once he was talking to some soldiers whom he was going to train. He had never seen them before, so his introduction was,“My name is Stone.and I'm even harder than stone,So do what I tell you.or there will be trouble.Don't try to break me.Then we'll get on well together.”
Then he went to the soldiers one after another and asked them his name.“Speak loudly so that everyone can hear clearly,”he said,“and don't forget to call me‘sir’.”
Each soldier told him his name, until he came to the last one. This man remained silent, and so Captain Stone shouted at him,“When I ask you any question, answer it.I will ask you again. What's your name, soldier?"
This time the soldier had to answer the question. He was very much afraid, but at last he replied in a low voice,“My name is Stone Breaker, sir.”
    Text 6

The police called the man who lost the wallet to pick it up.Luckily for the family,a TV news reporter filmed the story.People from all over the world heard the story and sent them letters, money, and even offered them jobs.A businessman even let them live in his house for free for six months. So far,the family has received over $l 00,000.Now the Smiths’ future is bright. It seems that being unselfish really makes a difference.
