On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive. Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. She seldom became angry, but she was this time. “Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth. “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had. My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me. “ I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt – ridden face. “ Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It’s time we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.” I couldn’t believe it ! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide – the very one that I had been saving up money to buy. All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day and it will echo forever. 72. What am I thinking of doing? I have decided to become a middle school teacher. I had this dream when I was only a child. I love children and I don’t think that dealing with them all year around is a waste of time. On the contrary, it makes me feel happy. As we all know, teachers are badly needed in our country. However, not many of us want to become teachers. One of the main reasons for this is that teachers work too hard and get too little. In spite of that, I am determined to devote the rest of my life to the cause of education. (责任编辑:admin) |
