    Americans can travel almost anywhere they choose. But to protect its people, the government lists a few dangerous places where Americans cannot go. These places are unfriendly countries or countries at war. There, the traveler might not be safe. These countries are listed in a small book called a passport.
    This passport is a government request for the safety of its travelling people. It is also a government’s pledge(保证) that the people will obey the rules of the host country.
    To receive a passport from the government, a traveler must prove that he is an American citizen(公民). An American cannot go abroad without a passport. Only certain close countries such as Canada and Mexico do not ask for passports.

    The Red Cross is an international organization which cares for people who are in need of help. A man in Paris hospital who needs blood, a woman in Mexico who injured in an earthquake, and a family in India that lost their home in a storm may all be helped by the Red Cross.
    The Red Cross exists in almost every country around the globe. The world Red Cross organizations are sometimes called the Red Crescent, the Red Mogen David, the Sun, and the Red Lion. All of the agencies(机构) share a common goal(目的) of trying to help people in need.
    The idea of forming an organization to help the sick and wounded during a war started with Jean Henri Dunant. In 1859, he observed how people were suffering on a battle field in Italy. He wanted to help all the wounded people without caring about which side they were fighting for. The most important result of his work was an international treaty called the Geneva Convention. It protects prisoners of war, the sick and wounded, and other citizens during a war.
    The American Red Cross was set up by Clara Barton in 1881. Today the Red Cross in the United States supplies a number of services for the public, such as helping people in need, teaching first help, demonstrating(演示) water safety and artificial respiration(人工呼吸), providing blood.
