    Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving Day is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is the most traditional American holiday. The first Thanksgiving Day was held in Massachusetts in 1621. After a year of great hardship, the colonist (移民) wanted to give thanks to God for their first harvest. They invited their Indian friends to join them in a big feast ( 盛宴). Today the holiday is still celebrated as a day for giving thanks. But it wasn't a regular national holiday until President Lincoln declared that the last Thursday in November would be thereafter Thanksgiving Day in 1863. It is a day of family reunion ( 团圆) and it is customary (风俗的) to invite friends to share the meal. In some large cities, there are important football games that are played on Thanksgiving Day.
For Americans, Thanksgiving Day is one of the few days of the year when the entire family gets together. Everyone is glad to see everyone else and there is a very busy exchange of greetings. The women soon disappear into the kitchen to help prepare the dinner. The men, meanwhile, settle down to watch a football game on television, or to discuss business or politics. If weather permits, some of the more athletic men go outside to play ball games with the children. Then everyone will sit down to dinner, in which traditional Thanksgiving foods such as stuffed turkey, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and pumpkin pies are served. After dinner, people will sit around and talk.

A few weeks ago a group of scientists produced a report about global warming and the natural world. They wanted to find out if global warming was dangerous for plants and animals. The scientists were surprised by what they found. They say that during the next 50 years about 25%of land animals and plants will become extinct.More than 1 million plant and animal species will become extinct by 2050.
The head of the research team,Christ Thomas, who is a professor of conservation biology at Leeds University, said the results of their research were frightening. More than 10%of all plants and animals will become extinct. It is too late to save many plants and animals because of the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere. But the scientists say if we control greenhouse gases now,we could save many more plants and animals from extinction.
The scientists studied some areas of the world with a very rich biology. These areas were Europe, Australia, Central and South America, and South Africa. Their studies showed that species living in mountainous areas had a better chance of survival because they could move uphill to get cooler. In flat areas, such as deserts, plants and animals would have to move very long distances to get cooler, so they are in greater danger of extinction. The scientists found many surprising things. For example, they found that half of the 24 species of butterfly they studied in Australia would soon become extinct.

    C. Many more animals and plants still can be saved.

    67. What can be the best title of this passage?
    A. Greenhouse effect and global warming
    B. Extinct animals in the world
    C. A terrifying discovery concerning global warming
    D. Disappearance of butterflies.

When we hear the words “college students”,we usually think of a young person between 18 and 22 years old.But in the U.S.A today, a college student often is much older. In fact, educators say in the next few years colleges and universities may have more older part-time students than traditional(传统的)full-time younger students.
Educators report a big increase in the number of Americans who attend college and university classes in the evening or at night or weekends. Most of them are older than 25 years old and more have full-time or part-time jobs. Many are in their thirties or forties.
Why are so many people deciding to spend their time and money in order to continue their education? Most are doing it because they believe more education will help them to get a better job. Some are industrial workers whose factories have closed. They are learning new skills to prepare for other kinds of work. Some of the part-time students are not pleased with the jobs they have. They are studying for new ones,Some have retired(退休)and are looking for new kinds of work. Two of every three of the students older than 35 are women. Many of them are returning to school after years of staying at home to care for children.
