The only constant is change. If there’s one thing we can count on in our life it is that whatever is going on now will change. We live in an ever-changing universe. Everything in our world, including our very bodies is changing. The cells in our body are totally replaced every seven years. The seasons change as do governments, businesses, cultures, the sun, moon, stars, and, of course, us.
Unfortunately, it is our nature to resist change of any kind. I don’t know about you, but I find this a bit strange. We are trying to resist change in an ever-changing universe. Unsuccessfully, I might add. The fear of change and fear of the unknown is so strong in some people that they will remain in abusive relationships, unhealthy environments, and many other self-destructive situations, rather than face the unknown. If you want to have a successful, happy and productive life, you must learn to accept, even welcome or embrace change.
I know it can be difficult. We become comfortable with the present situation, going along on our path feeling fine and all of a sudden, wham! Something happens to upset our apple cart. It can be your vacation or a broken date. Whatever the situation change or circumstance we must learn to handle it or we may be troubled by it.
The best way I know of to deal with challenging situations is to ask better questions. Ask questions like what’s good about this? Or, how can I best cope with this situation? Or, how can I make the best of this? I remember once being fired from my job at a TV production company. When the boss told me I was no longer needed, I thanked him. You should have seen the look on his face. He expected me to be angry and was shocked at my response. I viewed my losing the as the opportunity I was waiting for. He gave me the push I needed to start my own business and I’ve never looked back. Of course, it may be wise to seek outside help, especially in serious situations. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Our society has a support system for almost any challenge you may be facing. If all else fails, in a changing situation, remember the wisdom of the passage above.

When talking to shy people, it is important to follow certain guidelines so as not to discourage them while trying to have them open up to you.
Limit questions. It may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many people don’t seem to understand that shy people don’t want to talk to you. They’d rather listen to you. By all means ask questions and show that you are actually interested in what they have to say. 51 Doing this makes you sound like an interrogator(询问者), not a friend.
Be patient. It may take some time to get the full answer, so don’t be afraid of a little silence. Prompting(催促), such as “go on”, will not help and will likely make them nervous. 52 Give them enough time to do so.
Listen carefully to their answers and give positive feedback(反馈意见). Be sure to give sincere feedback between questions, as well as communicate your thoughts and ideas on the subject.
53 Avoid making jokes at the expense of shy people, unless your are sure they will enjoy it. Remember it is not always the best policy to compliment them. Some shy people feel really awkward when complemented. Avoid asking them why they are shy. 54 Respect their choice when they choose to be quiet in a group conversation.
55 If you have discovered an activity that they enjoy, or have one in mind that you think they would appreciate, ask them if they would be interested in meeting with you later for that activity. It may be that the shy person prefers doing things rather than talking about them.
